Topping is an essential part of paddock maintenance. Topping encourages young growth as well as stimulating root growth which will lead to a much improved grass sward. A thicker grass sward will help prevent weed growth. 

We carry out all our topping work with a flail mower. The benefit of using a flair mower is it reduces grass cuttings to much smaller pieces (mulch). The mulch will rot down a lot quicker, feeding and revitalising the soil and allowing animals to return grazing sooner. The mini roller on the back of the mower will crush the crowns and encourage the fresh new grass to spread. Overall resulting in a thicker lush grass.

Harrowing is a key part of spring and autumn grassland management. Harrowing the ground removes dead, old thatch which builds up and prevents the growth of the grass sward. The harrows will allow light and air into the soil and also to the base of the sward, thus encouraging healthy new growth. 

Rolling your ground will help level out any unevenness caused by poaching and will help firm up the ground to reduce any further damage. As the roller moves it gently crushes the grass crown which will encourage the grass to spread and maximise its growth. 

We highly recommend rolling paddocks after harrowing.
